On May 19, we celebrated a remarkable milestone, the 90th birthday of G. Allan Kingston, one of the most influential champions of affordable housing in our nation’s history and a beloved member of the National CORE family.
Widely known as the “Father of Affordable Housing,” Allan’s work has touched thousands of lives, and many of the values we uphold today were shaped by his leadership and vision. Over his 50+ year career, he’s done more than build homes, he’s built hope. From families and seniors to veterans and those experiencing homelessness, Allan has always believed that housing should be a gateway to opportunity and dignity.
As President and CEO of Century Housing, Allan helped finance more than 14,000 affordable and workforce apartment homes across 52 communities in Southern California. But his impact didn’t stop there, he also launched More than Shelter, a nonprofit that provided services many of us at Hope through Housing would recognize: after-school programs, job training, senior support and even charter schools.
Allan joined the National CORE Board in 1999. Over the years, he has become not just a leader but a mentor, a connector and a fierce advocate for our mission. His belief in National CORE and Hope through Housing helped shape who we are today.
To everyone who works at National CORE or Hope through Housing: you are part of Allan Kingston’s legacy. His tireless efforts paved the way for the work we do every day, and on his 90th birthday, we celebrate not just his life, but the lives that have been changed because of him.
Happy Birthday, Allan!
Thank you for inspiring us to keep dreaming big, pushing boundaries and building communities where hope truly lives.
