National CORE’s AAPI Affinity Group hosted “Lumpia & Learn” on Oct. 30 to celebrate Filipino American Heritage Month. The event welcomed 27 in-person attendees and five more via Zoom, offering a taste of Filipino culture with traditional lumpia and turon, a dessert version of the tasty treat filled with Saba banana and jackfruit, wrapped and fried to crispy perfection.
Arve-Dale Lloren, a National CORE team member, shared her journey from the Philippines to the U.S. and reflected on her experience learning Filipino history through a colonial lens.
“Growing up, I learned what was done to us as Filipinos, not what we contributed to society,” she said.
The event concluded with an open conversation, giving participants a deeper understanding of Filipino culture and contributions in addition to a taste of the Philippines.
