The Founder’s Room at National CORE buzzed with excitement as families applauded 35 scholarship winners during Hope through Housing’s inaugural Building Bright Futures scholarship ceremony on June 17. The winners earned a total of $38,000 and received 25 laptops to support their academic aspirations.

The Building Bright Futures Scholarship, established in 2020, aims to provide financial support to high-achieving residents living in National CORE affordable housing communities. Since its inception, the program has awarded $126,000 in scholarships, helping students pursue their educational dreams.

Hope through Housing is committed to increasing college and career readiness through various activities, including after-school programs, school success celebrations, career conversations, college-prep activities, and scholarships. This holistic approach supports children and teens in achieving future success both in school and beyond.

“The unwavering support and commitment from Hope through Housing towards our educational journey is nothing short of remarkable,” said Karen Cerecerez, a two-time recipient of the Building Bright Futures scholarship. “The scholarships have not only eased our financial burdens but also empowered us to pursue our dreams with renewed rigor.”

Karen, a single mother and veteran pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science at Mt. San Antonio College, aspires to a career in law. Despite personal and financial hardships, her passion for community and advocacy has driven her success.

During the event, 16 scholarships and six laptops were distributed. Additionally, two returning scholarship recipients received an extra $1,500 each for their outstanding academic achievements. A separate celebration will be held for the San Diego recipients.

“We feel like the recipients are our family after reading their personal statements,” said Jayne Ruane, a member of the Building Bright Futures scholarship review committee. “These applicants have been navigating an ever-changing world and they really exhibit resilience and ingenuity in overcoming obstacles.”
