The sizzle of fresh patties on the grill blended with a crooner’s romantic tones at Veterans Park as residents celebrated Labor Day with burgers, raffle prizes and lavender-scented pillows.
This event is one of many organized by Veterans Park services coordinator Melody Sitt as a way of boosting camaraderie among community members.
“These events are a great chance for residents to build community and just talk to each other,” Melody said. “Besides creating a space for veterans to take part in social connectedness, I also want to show our appreciation for our veterans and everything they’ve done for us.”
Studies show that higher social connectedness can ease PTSD symptom severity among veterans.
Food and raffle prizes were donated by Thundar, Lightning & Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans as they transition back to civilian life. The grassroots organization works frequently with Melody.
The pillows were donated by Lavender Luxury, a small business that works with organizations to serve disadvantaged populations by providing pillows – in addition to a nutritious meal, water, clothing and blankets.
“We understand the importance of comfort for everyone but especially for under-served populations like veterans,” said Ana Serrano, the assistant plant manager/operations tasks at Lavender Luxury.
Hope through Housing is committed to empowering residents, like Army veteran Renee, 34, to thrive.
“I like getting out and celebrating with such nice people. It’s great to know that someone cares enough to help us veterans,” Renee said.
