Children flocked to the big grassy area nestled in the Corona del Rey affordable housing community, where Hope through Housing’s After-school Program and Services Coordinator Hugo Magaña assigned them to teams.
The groups competed for a chance to win the Corona del Rey Cup purchased by property management – all part of Hope through Housing’s efforts to bring health and wellness to more residents.
The idea stemmed from an observation by Hope through Housing’s Fitness and Wellness Manager Uzi Tayou, who is also a defender on the Empire Strykers arena soccer team. Kids at the property that he lived in were getting into trouble – something he said could be remedied with fitness.
“I saw the need for sports,” Uzi said. “As a nonprofit, our job is to help people so if I am able to provide this to at least one person then I’ve done my job.”
As part of the summer youth scholars’ program, Uzi implemented his Do Fitness! With Uzi, an exercise program that engages children in the after-school program. The activity began at several Rancho Cucamonga properties, including Mountainside, Villaggio and Rancho Verde, as well as some Los Angeles and San Bernardino properties.
Over the course of four weeks, Hugo – also a member of the Empire Strykers – expanded the program to the Riverside communities – primarily Corona del Rey, Corona del Oro and Mission Pointe.
“Part of our mission is to provide services for our residents to thrive,” Hugo said. “Health and wellness is an important aspect of living a fulfilling life and I think this is a beautiful way to check that box off.”
